Germany We’ve added a new consumer confidence indicator created by the Swiss institute TrendEcon. Rather than relying on surveys, their researchers used Google Trends and built a Perceived Economic Situation index based on search terms reflecting people’s worries about the economy. The index contradicts the more traditional consumer surveys from DG ECFIN and GfK, as the chart below highlights.
Iran UANI (“United Against Nuclear Iran”) is a US-based advocacy group and non-profit organisation whose activities include tracking the impact of embargo measures taken against Tehran. We added their tanker tracker – which uses automatic identification system (AIS) data, satellite imagery, vessel comparison and tanker classification – and cargo datasets to uncover under-the-radar ship-to-ship (STS) transfers and exports of Iranian oil and gas condensates.
As the chart below highlights, exports of Iranian oil have been gradually increasing in recent years, taking another step higher after Russia’s war in Ukraine and the sanctions that resulted complicated the international oil market. China is by far the biggest buyer of Iranian oil.
Japan We’ve added daily electricity prices from the Japan Electric Power Exchange. The dataset divides 24-hour periods into 30-minute slots to provide more granular detail about demand.
In the chart below, we chose to display the evolution of electricity prices throughout a recent day, comparing it to the average of the past 30 days and its equivalents a year, two years and three years ago.
The outlier is the same day in 2022, when the global energy shock had power prices soaring.
