United States We have now added the Community Bank Sentiment Index (CBSI) to our US data. The index is derived from quarterly polling surveys in which regional bankers from across the country are asked to assess the outlook of the economy at the grassroots level. An index reading of 100 indicates a neutral sentiment, while anything above 100 indicates a positive sentiment and anything below 100 indicates negative sentiment.
As of Q4 2023, the index remains below 100 for the eighth consecutive quarter, marking a sustained period of negative sentiment among these bankers. However, there appears to have been an improving trend since Q2 2023, when the index reached its all-time low, suggesting that this group is becoming less pessimistic about the economic outlook.
A further valuable addition for the United States is the new Chicago Fed Advance Retail Trade Summary (CARTS) index compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. This serves as an important indicator of consumer spending in the US – a major element of economic activity.
The bank previously discontinued the original CARTS index in early 2022 bank after losing access to several input series from various providers. The revised CARTS 2.0 index includes a broader set of consumer spending indicators.
The chart below shows the index with the headline retail trade indicator for the United States and indicates a slowdown in consumption in the first two months of 2024. The chart demonstrates how volatile retail trade has been, peaking in early 2021. The recent slowdown can be attributed to a number of factors including lower savings and increased debt, interest rates and changes in the labour market.
United Kingdom We have added the seasonality-adjusted version of the credit and debit cards spending tracker, broken down by type of spending, to our UK data. A surge in work-related spending can be seen in early 2020, likely due to investment in setting up home offices and technology for remote work in response to the pandemic. In contrast, the social and delayable spending categories saw sharp declines over the same period, reflecting lockdown measures and the postponement of non-essential purchases. By 2023, spending in all categories stabilizes, suggesting a return to pre-pandemic normality tempered by macroeconomic factors such as inflation, changes in employment rates and global economic trends.
