South Africa We’ve added regional employment numbers. The chart below looks at the pandemic by measuring the percent change since the first quarter of 2020, breaking down the impact of each South African province.
The pandemic hit the South African economy hard, and the number of employed persons fell more than 12 percent in the second quarter alone. Employment is still at a lower level than the first quarter of 2020 – dragged down by Gauteng province (in orange), which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria and accounts for a third of the economy.
On the other side of the spectrum, employment in the Western Cape is higher than it was pre-pandemic.
South Korea More granularity is now available for the Bank of Korea’s business survey: sub-sectors for manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries have been added, presenting the opportunity for a deeper dive into the data.
In the chart below, we focused on trends in the ‘exports growth’ survey by creating a diffusion index of manufacturing sub-sectors, tracking the proportion showing positive year-on-year growth. The index is at 17 percent, close to its historic lows. That helps explain why exports are in negative territory year-on-year, as highlighted by the green line and right-hand axis.
Switzerland The KOF Business survey for the hotel and catering industry is now available. One of the datasets focuses on obstacles highlighted by professionals in this industry, and visualising it provides an insight into how this sector suffered during the pandemic.
More than 70 percent of firms reported insufficient demand during the 2020-2021 winter season. There was also burst of problems with “legal circumstances” (the red columns), which represented an obstacle for more than 80% of the industry.
The picture has shifted from 2022 onwards. Labour shortages (in dark blue) now represent the industry’s biggest problem.
