We’ve added a new dataset from Euratom, the European Atomic Energy Community, displaying EU imports of natural uranium, per country of origin.
As a consequence of Russia’s war in Ukraine, the EU is trying to reduce its dependance on Russian oil and gas. One alternative which is coming back on the table is the development of nuclear power. However, a certain degree of dependance also exists: several nuclear reactors are Russian-designed (18 out of 103, in five of the 13 nuclear EU member states), and as the chart below highlights, 20.2% of natural uranium imports to EU originated from Russia in 2020.
China
For China, we’ve expanded our coverage of PPI (Producer Price Index) indices with the addition of province-level indices from the NBS (National Bureau of Statistics).
The chart below aggregated the 31 province-level PPI to calculate a median as well as several percentiles, highlighting the surge in producer costs and supply-chain issues since 2021. While the median is currently normalising, a high dispersion still exists across the provinces.
Turkey
We’ve increased our real estate data coverage for Turkey with the addition of real estate prices, in local currency / square meter, for the three largest cities (Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir) and the whole country.
Turkey is going through economic turmoil, with a currency that has lost half its value in the past 12 months. As a result – and combined with the situation in the commodities markets (especially for food-related products and energy) – inflation is now above 70% year on year.
To protect their savings against this episode of hyper-inflation, many investors turned to the real estate sector, boosting the demand. Western sanctions against Russia also generated a massive flow of investments into Turkish real estate by wealthy Russians. Combined with other factors, real estate prices are increasing exponentially, as the chart below highlights.
Belize
We continue to expand our macroeconomic coverage for frontier markets. In the past two weeks, we’ve added the Balance of Payments breakdowns for Belize, allowing users to create charts like the one below, detailing the structure of Belize’s current account.
