For Australia, we’ve just added GDP Nowcasts from the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economics & Social Research.

Nowcasts will be revised on a monthly basis.

China

We’ve expanded our Transportation coverage for China with the addition of Cargo & Container Throughput variables. Data is available on a Port level, divided between Costal and Inland locations. Several methodologies are available, including monthly flows and yearly cumulative data.

In the chart below, we displayed the national container throughput variable, and sliced it per year – rebasing January to 100.

Spain

For Spain, we‘ve added Passenger Transportations statistics. The dataset provides the following dimensions:

• By Type; City, Inter-City, Peninsular, Intersular
• By Means: Metro, Bus, Train, Domestic Air, Maritime
• By Distance

There are various ways to work with the dataset. One is to compare the yearly trends by slicing the data.

In the first chart below, we rebased the series to January = 100. The impact of the pandemic in 2020 is very significant, with a 50 to 75% drop compared to the 2005-2019 mean. However, the evolution in 2021 seems to be way over average, and this is where methodology is important: as the 2nd chart shows, when displaying the raw data, 2021 is still way under the average passenger transportation figures but has increased significantly since January with the ease of restrictions (+50% in 5 months), hence the visual impact on the first chart.
