For the United States, we’ve added a new HFI dataset covering Container Vessels Activity in the port of Los Angeles.

Stories around global supply-chain shortages have made the headlines over the past months. Smooth inbound & outbound container flows in ports are one of the keys to get the supply-chain moving again. Monitoring traffic in Los Angeles ports is highly relevant as they handle almost 40% of all seaborne imports to the United States.

The chart below highlights the current difficulties. While more container vessels depart from the LA ports than in the past 5 years, the problem lies in the number of vessels still at anchor and waiting for their turn.

In maritime language, and with some simplifications, being at berth refers to being at the dock, ready to be -or being – unloaded, while being at anchor means awaiting outside the port for a place to dock.

While vessels were staying in average 3 to 4 days at anchor & berth before the pandemic, the average has now jumped to 15 days together with a strong increase of vessels stuck waiting to enter and go at berth.

In mid-October, the Biden administration announced that the LA ports will operate 24 hours per day, to try solving the current bottleneck. But with Christmas coming, more efforts throughout the U.S. supply-chain will be needed.

India

For India, we’ve added  the Naukri JobSpeak Report. Naukri is the largest jobs website in India, and their indices describe the month-over-month hiring trends per activity, based on recruiters’ activities  on the website.

In the chart below, we presented the Top 20 MoM increase / decrease.  

United States

A second addition for the United States that we wanted to highlight is the Zumper National Rent Report, which provides current median asking prices for one-and two-bedroom apartments at the city level.

Data is aggregated from over one million active listings to calculate median asking rents for the top 100 cities by population.

In the chart below, we decided to use these 100 time series to create a diffusion index, measuring the % share of cities with a monthly increase.

Chile

With presidential elections planned for Sunday 21th November, we’ve added Election polls data for Chile.

The Chilean presidential election is using a two-rounds system: if no candidate receives the majority of the votes, a 2nd round will be held. The current president, Sebastián Piñera cannot run due to consecutive term limits.

The chart below displays the latest polls data from Cadem, as well as the polls data from 4 weeks ago, and the high-low range since the beginning of the polls. In terms of dynamic, it is worth noting the switch between Sebastian Sichel (Chile Podemos Más center-right coalition) and Jose-Antonio Kast (Christian Social Front), who is now running ahead.
